We welcome homeschool families to participate in our public programs and the following offerings designed specifically for homeschooled students. These classes are for homeschooled students only, are based on age, and are offered several times during the school year.

Class Details:

  • Classes include a significant amount of time outside. Please dress for the weather.
  • Advanced registration and payment is required. 
  • Parents do NOT need to stay. 
  • If your child has a particular educational/classroom need you must make Quarry Hill aware prior to the start date of class so we can be prepared to provide a successful experience for students.
  • Epi-Pens:  If your child requires an Epi-Pen and a responsible adult is not accompanying the child for the duration of the class an Epi-Pen authorization form (with physician anaphylaxis plan) must be completed and returned to Quarry Hill Nature Center prior to the start date. Please contact the Nature Center for more information. 

COVID safety:
Masks are required inside the building for all individuals over the age of 2. Masks are not required when outside.

Ages 5-7

Examining Life (Ages 5-7) - November 12, 9:00 - 11:00 AM
Students observe, measure & draw small living animals.  Brief puppet shows will help students understand animal life cycles through the seasons.  Students will then spend time in the Exploration Hall matching animal babies to their animal parents!
Fee = $8.00/student

Let's Bee Nosey (Ages 5-7) - April 21, 1:00 - 3:00 PM
Students will compare their five senses with the senses of honey bees.  Students also learn how honey is made, help extract honey from comb, and taste honey.  Finally student head outdoors to look for all the things bees need to survive.

Ages 8-10

Habitats & Biomes (Ages 8-10) - November 12, 9:00 - 11:00 AM
Explore how a scientist defines a habitat versus a biome. Learn about Minnesota's biomes and how each is unique. Then head outside on a hike to the pond, prairie, and forest to investigate what animals use these areas as a part of their habitat. Students will also play a matching 'Find the Habitat' game (indoors).

Life Cycles of Trees (Ages 8-10) - April 21, 1:00 - 3:00 PM
Students will enjoy an introduction to the parts and lives of trees before hiking to find examples of trees at various stages of life. Observation and dichotomous keys will be used to identify tree leaves and seeds.

Ages 11-14

Cross Country Skiing (Ages 11-14) - January 19, 1:00-2:30 PM
Students learn the basics of cross country skiing including the essential equipment and the tricks to successful skiing.  No experience is needed.  All equipment is provided.  Student should wear snow pants, a hat, and gloves/mittens.
Fee = $12.00/student

Track that Trash (Ages 11-14) - April 21, 1:00-3:00 PM
Visit the Olmsted County Waste-to-Energy plant and Recycling Center. Students will tour both facilities and also spend time at 12 waste-related learning stations.
There is no fee for this offering. Class fees are covered by Olmsted County.
